Dunhuang’s art is a mix of Chinese, Central Asian, and Indian influences. The city was an important center of Buddhist art, and many of the caves in Dunhuang contain Buddhist art. The most famous of these is the Mogao Caves, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Mogao Caves contain more than 500,000 square feet of paintings and sculptures. The art in the caves ranges from the 4th century to the 14th century.
